An ikaite column, an alkaline, low-saline and cold environment from the Ikka Fjord in Greenland. The interior of the calcium carbonate column contains a large number of alkaliphilic and psychrophilic bacteria, whereas the exterior of the column harbours a wide variety of marine animals and algae. Rhodonellum psychrophilum gen. nov., sp. nov., a psychrophilic and alkaliphilic bacterium of the phylum Bacteroidetes, has been isolated from an ikaite column. Image courtesy P.
