Front cover illustration

Rosette of cells belonging to morphotype V of the Blastocaulis-Planctomyces group of bacteria probed with the fluorescein-labelled oligonucleotide PLA46, a probe specific for members of the order Planctomycetales. An autofluorescing diatom (Nitzchia sp.) is also visible. A water sample was collected from an artificial pond near Tempe, Arizona, concentrated and then probed with PLA46 and observed using a Nikon Eclipse TE300 inverted microscope. The image was captured through the ocular tube of the microscope using a Nikon Coolpix 5000 digital camera fitted with an MMC001-5K adaptor. Image provided by Christopher J.
