ABSTRACT

The Judicial Commission of the International Committee for Systematics of Prokaryotes has decided to place the genus Pelczaria with the species Pelczaria aurantia on the list of nomina rejicienda, due to the lack of an authentic type or neotype strain.

Published online ahead of print on 22 October 2004 as DOI 10.1099/ijs.0.63547-0.

Pelczaria aurantia was described as a new genus and species (type strain, ATCC 49321T=DSM 12801T) by Poston (1993)Go, and both names were validly published in Validation List no. 48 (Poston, 1994Go). Schumann et al. (2000)Go showed by DNA–DNA hybridization, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, cell wall composition, phospholipid and DNA base ratio analyses that this strain was a strain of Kocuria rosea (Stackebrandt et al., 1995Go; ex Micrococcus roseus Flügge 1886Go).

In a Request for an Opinion, Tindall et al. (2000)Go reported that comparisons of ATCC 49321T (=DSM 12801T) and a further strain obtained from the depositor (at the NIH, Bethesda, MD, USA) were identical. All strains studied did not conform with the circumscription (Poston, 1993Go) of the genus Pelczaria and the species Pelczaria aurantia Poston 1994Go, indicating that the deposited type strain did not represent an authentic strain of that species.

In their Request for an Opinion, Tindall et al. (2000)Go, applying Rule 18c of the Bacteriological Code (Lapage et al., 1992Go), suggested that if a suitable neotype strain could not be found within 2 years of the publication of their Request the Judicial Commission place the names Pelczaria and Pelczaria aurantia on the list of rejected names. After these 2 years had passed without anyone claiming to possess an authentic type strain or proposing a neotype strain of Pelczaria aurantia, the Judicial Commission has decided in favour of the Request by Tindall et al. (2000)Go: the genus name Pelczaria and the species name Pelczaria aurantia are to be placed on the list of nomina rejicienda.
