Polyphasic study of wine Lactobacillus strains: taxonomic implications, by A. M. Rodas, S. Ferrer and I. Pardo

International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology vol. 55, part 1, pp. 197 - 207

Supplementary Fig. A. Dendrograms derived from phenotypic patterns of heterofermentative lactobacilli (I) and homofermentative/facultatively heterofermentative lactobacilli (II). Simple matching coefficient and the UPGMA clustering method were used to perform the analysis.

Supplementary Fig. B. Dendrogram derived from the comparison of combined RFLP-PFGE patterns (SfiI, NotI and SmaI) obtained from wine lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and reference strains. The clustering is based on the UPGMA method, levels of similarity between patterns were calculated by using the Dice coefficient for SfiI and NotI and Pearson's coefficient for SmaI. Abbreviations: L. cellobio., L. cellobiosus; L. corynif. corynif., L. coryniformis subsp. coryniformis; L. d. bulg.; L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus; L. d. delb.; L. delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii; L. d. lac.; L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis; L. ferment., L. fermentum.

Supplementary Fig. C. Dendrogram derived from comparison of the combined 16S-ARDRA (BfaI and MseI) obtained from wine LAB and reference strains. Pearson's coefficient and the UPGMA clustering method were used for the analysis.

Supplementary Fig. D. RAPD patterns obtained with primers 17R (I), 16R and COC (II). Lanes 1 and 20, 1 Kb ladder Plus (Invitrogen). Lanes 2-19: strains 40, L. brevis CECT 216, 404, L. collinoides CECT 922T, 25, 328, 389, 492, L. hilgardii NCFB 264T, 451, L. paracasei subsp. paracasei CECT 4022T, 16, 147, 202, L. plantarum CECT 748T, 82, 52, L. mali CECT 4149.

Supplementary Fig. E. Dendrogram derived from comparison of the combined RAPD patterns (16R, 17R and COC) obtained from wine LAB and reference strains. Pearson's coefficient and the UPGMA clustering method were used for the analysis.

Supplementary Fig. F. Dendrogram derived from EcoRI ribotypes of wine lactobacilli and reference strains. Pearson's coefficient and the UPGMA clustering method were used for the analysis.

Supplementary Table A. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values between 10 wine strains and reference strains of some Lactobacillus species.
