A novel Gram-negative, orange-pigmented, slightly halophilic, rod shaped strain T30T was isolated from the South China Sea. Phylogenetic analysis showed that strain T30T was a member of the genus Erythrobacter, sharing the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with E. aquimaris JCM 12189T (99.5 %) and E. vulgaris DSM 17792T (99.0 %). Levels of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain T30T and closely related strains of Erythrobacter species ranged from 14.5 to 56.9 %.This isolate lacked bacteriochlorophyll a and contained ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) as the predominant respiratory lipoquinone. The major fatty acids of this strain were C18:1{omega}7c (38.2%) and C16:1{omega}7c/ C16:1{omega}6c (17.4%). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content of this strain was 59.5 mol %. On the basis of phenotypic and phylogenetic data, a new species Erythrobacter nanhaisediminis is proposed; the type strain is T30T (=CGMCC 1.7715T=JCM 16125T).
