Division of Biological Sciences, National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa, Canada KIA OR6

ABSTRACT

Acetivibrio cellulosolvens BASTwas compared with Acetivibrio cellulolyticus CD2Tand was found to be identical in all morphological and biochemical characteristics. The description of the genus Acetivibrio is emended as originally described by I. M. Robinson and A. E. Ritchie (Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol. 31:333-338, 1981) to include anaerobic, gram-negative, straight to slightly curved rods that produce mainly acetic acid, ethanol, H2 and CO2 and that are motile by means of a single flagellum or multiple flagella. It is proposed that A. cellulosolvens BASTbe correctly classified as A. cellulolyticus.
